I changed my mind about the Garfield thing because its a cub scout promo and
appropriate for the age and mission of cubbing. The characters are suitable
for cub scout use and the boys identify with the icons.
Garfield is fat and lazy but Garfield is cool and thoughtful even if cynical
and self indulgent (2 positves out of 6 -not a bad start- We will attend the
other four when Garfield becomes Boy and joins a Boy Scout Troop)
I think the major objectors are those who are well conversed with old
fashioned boy scout values (Look up USCode Title 36 Sec 23 to find out
what we are about and charged to do) and a character like Garfield would
not last long in that type of scouting.
One of the strokes of genius occured when the BSA was chartered and not
allowed to operate units (like Girl scouts) thereby preserving local values
and leadership interpretations on a fine set of guides for raising boys in a
non-educational-non entertainent modality (the fun and knowledge occur
