The equal-length method will give a much more accurate E-W line. The
farther away from the tropics you are, the more the shadow-stick method
varies from giving you east (towards NE in the northern hemisphere, and
SE in the southern hemisphere).
Besides, if you're lost, the equal-length gives you something to do all
day while you stay where you are and wait for help to come. :)
