As a Webelos Den Leader, I had a disturbing incident happen at one of my
meetings. One of the WEbelos brought a squirt-style breath spray to den
meeting. All the boys thought it was cool to "get a squirt". Well, their
behavior was off the wall (we were trying to do REadyman). The boys
blamed their behavior on a "sugar high". I repeatedly told them to settle
down. Finally, I discontinued the activity and gave them something boring
to do. Change of pace helped.
I talked to them pretty sternly the following week (with some parents
present) about their disrespectful behavior, but also about the sharing of
the breath spray. I brought up - what if this was someone's inhaler?
What if you were really "high" not because of the sugar rush, but because
of the propellent. I pointed out the dangers of inhalents. They were
pretty subdued. I told them that they all made some poor decisions. And
that this was no different, behavior-wise, than "doing drugs".
It was unfortunate, but it did give me a "teachable moment" in a safe,
trusting environment. And I could tie it in to the Fitness requirements
