Star Scout David Swank asked us all:

Sounds like your Troop needs a new Senior Patrol Leader, David, not an
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.
The Assistant is normally appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader, not elected
by the Troop. There are a few Troops that do elect both Senior and
Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, however.

Then, have you considered:
*serving as an Instructor? Instructors provide the Troop with "specialists"
that will train and coach all members of the Troop in specific areas
*serving as Troop Historian? The Troop's Historian provides a running
record (in photos and in text) of what the Troop did and what it plans on
doing in the future.
*how about as a Troop Guide, working with the New Scout patrol and its
Patrol Leader and Assistant.
