Scouts-L Mail Archive for June of 1999: New Ordeal Candidate
New Ordeal Candidate
Thu, 3 Jun 1999 22:52:18 PDT
I am proud to report that news was received earlier this evening that our 16
year old son has been elected to the Order of the Arrow. He will be
participating in the Ordeal during our OA Fall Fellowship.
What makes this so special is revealed in his history. He has been eligible
for four years, but was never interested, and quite vocal about his
disinterest, although his older brother is Brotherhood! In addition, he is
no longer an active camper with his Troop because of a situation which arose
with one of the Troop adults. After the incident, we explored all the
options and he decided that it would probably be best for the Troop and for
him personally is he removed himself from the situation because he did not
want to cause any trouble.
Last summer, I went through Ordeal and he initiated a conversation about OA
when I got back. After our discussion, he decided he wanted to do this. If
you knew this young man, you would marvel at the tremendous amount of growth
and maturity exhibited here!
By the way, that adult is no longer active in the Troop, having moved on to
other things, but my son will, quite likely, not be able to resume camping
since he has just gotten a part time job.
As you might suspect, I couldn't be happier that he has reached this
milestone and am sure it will be a very meaningful experience for him,
considering the road traveled to reach this point.
Sometimes I just love this Scouting stuff!
Ordeal Member of the Order of the Arrow
. . .and a good ole' Bobwhite, too. . .
Oh yes, I plan to do Brotherhood when he does Ordeal and reserve the
privilege of putting his sash on him!
