Scouts-L Mail Archive for June of 1999: politically incorrect
Thu, 3 Jun 1999 19:17:10 -0500
The Boy Scouts were one of the featured topics on Bill Maher's Politically
Incorrect last night June 2 on ABC.
It was a rerun originally broadcast on January 8, 1998.
The subject regarded the California Supreme Court case which at the
original air time was still in progress.
It did feature one former Scout on the program, comedian Dennis Miller.
Dennis was the victim of hazing as a Scout and left the program. He said
at 3am his tent flap opened and an older Scout urinated on his head.
Dennis made light of his experience by saying, "What was I going for, my
golden shower badge or what?"
Author Barbara DeAngelis tried to make the point that there was such a
thing as "cool Scouts". Bill disagreed.
I think most would consider Dennis Miller to be cool, and he was a Scout,
so logic would then indicate that a "cool Scout" can be a reality.
Scouts were refered to as "squares" but at least we weren't called
"dorks" as in the May 12th program. I can live with square, dork is
offensive though (although we do have some).
We were defended on the program as a private organization.
Too bad Dennis Miller had that bad experience in Scouting. If you would
like to view the transcript of the program you can do so by visiting...
