Scouts-L Mail Archive for June of 1999: Rope

Where can I find rope at the best price? I'd like to invest in some good
rope for Pioneering projects and other knot tying endeavors. I understand
from the Merit Badge book that manila is the best for pioneering. I found
1/4 inch manila on the spool for 8 cents a foot; the larger diameter
manila was (the "usual size") 16 cents a foot. This was at the local
hardware store. Is this a good price? Is there a rope catalog? For
climbing purposes, are you better off buying it at the local outdoor shop
or through the catalogs?
For a knot board, is there a pre-drilled "peg board-type" material with
larger holes that you can purchase? I'd like to include knot boards at
our Pack Family Camp, but need a quick solution.
For teaching purposes, has anyone found that braided nylon is good, since
the knots (are more easily) removed? I like the larger diameters, but
this can be pricy also.
