A couple of months ago, I asked the list for suggestions on conducting an
Orienteering Camporee. Well, we just completed ours this past weekend. It
was a huge success!! We had 98 scouts and leaders attend. Every troop in the
district was there. I had a gentleman from the Vulcan Orienteering Club help
On Sat morning, we held 5 different classroom sessions. We taught the boys
basic map reading skills, map symbols, compass skills, learning their pace,
and a compass game.
Then in the afternoon, we had an orienteering course. The boys LOVED this.
It was a timed event (they had 90 minutes) and they had to find 11 markers.
A lot of the boys came back and said, "That was awesome! When can we do it
again?" That of course was the ultimate compliment.
Sat night at the campfire, we had our local OA chapter perform the callout
ceremony. Our OA chapter had been dormant for a few years. The boys had
candy fundraisers to purchase and make their costumes. They wrote their own

Overall, it was a great weekend. I had 20 year veteran scoutmasters tell me
that it was the best camporee that the have ever been to.
I would strongly suggest that you try doing this in your district.
