We are about to start a Venture Crew in conjunction with our troop. The
initial crew will all come from the troop. Most of the boys will be dual
registered. Any girls who join, of course, will not. A question has
already come up. After the initial crew is formed, it has been proposed
that any new members must be approved by the current members. That is, any
new potential member's name will be put to the crew and if they get two
thirds affirmative support, they are allowed to register. If not, they
cannot register in the crew.
The troop is a large troop, and we mostly do state and national park camping
and work on advancement and leadership skills. The purpose of the Venture
Crew will be to offer backpacking and high adventure opportunities. In the
troop there are some boys who are very active and still clearly disruptive,
no matter how closely we work with them. I see this request as an attempt
by some of the older boys to not have to continue to deal with these
Is there any experience out there among Venturing (exploring) groups in
having the boys take an active role in deciding who is a member of the Crew?
