When we have our troop open house, we traditionally build a fire in the parking
lot by spreading a several inch thick layer of sand and building on top of that.
Its easier to clean up if the sand is placed on a tarp or piece of plywood but
the scouts seem to forget that lesson each year!
A couple of years ago, the troop forgot to get the usual fire permit. A few
minutes after the fire was started, the doors of the fire station a block away
rolled up and the truck rolled out. Since it is a fairly common occurence, the
scouts didn't pay much heed until the truck stopped beside the parking lot. The
firemen didn't put out the fire and the tour of the fire truck turned out to be
a major feature of the evening program!!
