Reguarding having a bus or other means of mass transportation available
to your troop...my advice is to say NO as politely, but as firmly as

We have about 120 boys registered in the troop (average year is 100)...so
at first glance it seems that a bus would be a great idea. We know of
other troops that have busses, and typically they have very few adults
accompany the troop on campouts or at summer camp...the feeling is "why
should I go..it just takes two with the bus.
For the last three years, we have gone about a days drive away to summer
camp in Colorado, and last summers numbers were typical...65 youth, 22
adults...and all adults stayed the entire camp. At monthly troop
outings, we typically have one adult for every 5-7 youth ( the ratio of
passanger seats in most vehicles). I'm sure you see where this is all
Needing adults to drive gets new dads (and sometimes Moms) to go camping
so that their boy can go...and we make sure they feel welcome and this
leads to them becoming more active...and you set up a positive cycle of
The thing to remember is..make sure you train the adults that camp with
you to let the SPL and PL's run the show...we do adult fun type
activities ( my favorite of which is sitting and watching the boys over
there do their thing while talking with or playing hearts with the other
old duffers!! The boys have a vast pool of adult resources to call upon
if needed..the adults have fun....its a wonderful situation.
Please consider carfully the aquisition of "Mass transport"....it
sometimes cause many more problems than it solves.
