I would say...off the top of my head...an obscenity directed towards the
Council leadership that insisted your unit turn over to them an
unsolicited donation. I actually did this recently in a slightly
different..but very similar situation here in our council involving our
troop. The response, after much acrimonious exchange of letters and
threats..was that we kept this money..but a council policy was made that
would prevent any unit in the future from keeping money donated by a
corporation as a contribution for service volunteered by its employees.
Check to see if such a rule or reg exists in your councils by-laws, regs,
or whatever they call them there. If nothing is in writing...the money
is yours. I can tell you by personal experience that if there is no rule
locally that directs you to turn in specific types of unsolicited
donation...you can keep it ( the threat of publicity will work wonders
when leveled at the council)...but also from personal experience...I tell
you that even if you win and keep the funds, the professional staff (who
live and breath for money instead of Scouting..here anyway) will make you
pay personally in other ways.
Be sure that the sum is worth the personal grief it will bring on you
from the "pros"..then go for it if you feel its worth it.
