Den Chief Requirements

I have no idea of Troop/Boy Scout policies other that what I have
encountered in CSLBT and the Cub Scout Leader Book.
The Cub Scout Leader Book states that a Den Chief is
An older Boy Scout...preferably a former Cub Scout...ideally at least 1st
Class...selected by SPL and SM...upon request of the CM...approved by the
CM...and ..committee for recommendation to the den leader...registered as a
A Webelos Den Chief
An older experienced Boy Scout...preferably at least 13 ...at least 1st
Class...selected by SPL and SM...upon request by the CM or WDL...approved by
CM and committee for recommendation to the WDL...registered as a youth...
So having "quoted" that.......
So, I need to contact a Troop and request a Webelos Den Chief. Hopefully
youth will flock over and wish to become a WDC and I'll have dozens to
choose from...Then what are my responsibilities as the Den Leader? Before I
request a Den Chief, I need to have an idea of MY responsibilities.
>From reading the leader book I realize that there is Den Chief Training. Who
is usually responsibility for assuring the youth is trained - the Troop or
the Pack? (I think that training was offered concurrently with Powwow one
year) who picks up the cost of the training and needed materials? who
traditionally purchases the position patch and cords? I assume the den
leader/pack would do all of these things as they are the ones "receiving"
the "service", but I don't want to tread on any toes.... (I will discuss
this with each SM but right now I am looking for enough background
information to make an informed decision on getting a Den Chief)
I want this position to be a bit more than "the Boy Scout son of a Cub
leader helping out mom/dad" position I have observed in some dens. I'm
hoping that by offering the "required" training and "mentoring", the Webelos
Den Chief position will be attractive to more Scouts. Is there anything on
line that I can review?
I want to know that I can make the Den Chief position a meaningful
leadership position for the Scout before I offer the position to anyone.
Done well, it would be great on the job training for a PL or SPL position.
