You bring up an excellent idea! I am working on this
Webelos to Scout transition problem we are having in our
council right now and this gives me a good idea. Why not
start the Webelos to Scout Transition right now?! From one
Invite an area Scoutmaster and some of his scouts to meet
the new Webelos 2 scouts on the other side of the bridge.
Bridge them from Webelos one to Webelos two with the help of
a troop. Granted it should not be as fancy a ceremony as
the bridging to scouts, but it certainly will give them
something to look forward to. Plus, the Webelos two Dean
Leader should be there, on the other side of the bridge,
with the Scoutmaster and some scouts. Why? To get names and
addresses, of course.
As for a script? "Akela has traveled long and far and
reached great heights. But now he must prepare himself for a
new adventures and challenges......"etc, etc. Be sure to ask
the boys questions they can answer "I do" to. "Are you ready
for the new trail ahead of you?" Questions, answers and
challenges are a good ceremony.
The more ceremonies, the better the boys will like scouting.
One other thing to consider. If the boys uniforms are not
complete by now, tan shirt, Webelos scarf, Webelos hat, you
can complete the emsemble at the crossover. I know one pack
locally that has the Webelos one in the blue shirts and
Webelos twos in the tan shirts. That way the boys in the
pack can see the transition themselves. The Webelos ones
have the scarf and hat, but still use the blue shirt.
Just like in Wood Badge: embellish, embellish, embellish.
