BTW...has anyone noted the change in the 98 Guide to Safe Scouting that a
16 y.o with 6 months driving, no accidents or mv violations and parental
permission can drive scouts to and from an event? Scarey Huh?
Actually, what it says is:
"A driver must be currently licensed and at least 18 yrs of age. youth driver
exception: When traveling to an AREA, REGIONAL, or NATIONAL (my emphasis) Boy
Scout activity or any Venturing event under the leadership of an adult )at
least 21 yrs of age) tour leader, a youth member at least 16 yrs of age may
be a driver sublect to the followiing conditions..."
This does not mean any 16 1/2 yr old can drive on your next troop campout to
the woods. AREA, REGIONAL, and NATIONAL are specific jurisdictions.
As to the wisdom of letting a kid drive all the way to Fort AP Hill for NSJ
and not to the local camp for an overnight, I will leave speculation to finer
minds than mine.
