I have been passing information about WEBELOS Overnight Camping to our
Cub Scout trainers and Day Camp staff. Here is one response.
Thanks for the e-mail from Scouts-L regarding the WEBELOS overnight
camping "new rule." I just returned from Day Camp School where Rhoda
Clayton (Western Region Cub Scout
Activities Director -- or a title similar to that) addressed this
issue. According to
the National Standards for Day Camp 1999, it states on the front that
Day Camp is just
that--Day Camp, and that there should not be an overnight camping event
scouts in association with Day Camp.
According to Rhoda, the feeling at the national level is that by doing
this at day camp,
we are taking possible campers away from the Resident Camps (it would
appear that in
many areas, more than one night is included in the overnight camping
Additionally, BSA feels it is only appropriate for the WEBELOS to
overnight camp with
their dens and/or scout troop. Although we should not be doing it, this
year it is
stated only on the front introductory section of the standard (I would
quote it, but it
is at home) and if plans are already in place, we were advised to
continue with those
plans. Next year, however, it will be one of the mandatory points of

only the NE Region. It is a national edict. You may forward this to
