My thanks to all who send me their ideas on what this merit badge might be.
For those who are interested the answer is : Automobiling.
Don Scruggs provided the definitive answer. His description of the badge
matches the one I have exactly and he also provided the requirements which
quite interesting. Here's his response:
I think it is more likely to be the Automobiling Merit Badge.
In my October 1936 edition Automobiling is present. Although it is in
B&W the badge has a wheel with 9 spokes and what looks like a valve
stem. In order to earn this badge a scout must
Demonstrate the ability to start and stop a motor.
Mount pneumatic tires,
explain clutches (2 types), carburetor, valves, magneto, spark plug,
differential and two different types of transmissions.
Explain how to care for these.
Explain three differences between two cycle and four cycle motors.
Demonstrate how to put out burning gasoline or oil.
Pass a drivers license exam.
Give four rules to follow to insure safe crossing of a double track
Explain four types of railroad crossing signals.
Repeat the railroad safety slogan.
Answer 10 questions on Automobile safety.
Be of legal driving age.
