The 1999 Edition of the Guide to Safe Scouting (#34416B) is now
available for viewing on the US Scouting Service Project. This is the
edition with a Dark BLUE cover, and replaces the version with a dark RED
Major changes were in the Climbing/Rappelling section of Chapter IX to
match the new Climb On Safely program, in the Winter Sports safety
section of Chapter XIII. References to the Exploring program were
replaced with references to Venturing throughout the book. In addition,
there are minor changes in a number of locations.
New sections were added to Chapter III with information on "Hantavirus"
and "Rabies Prevention", and a new section was added to Chapter II on
"Who Can Instruct Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat Training".
Chapters IV, V, VII, AND X appear to have no changes.
We've replaced the gif images of the forms in the appendix with pdf
images, which are easier to read, clearer, and can be printed out for
use. You do need Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is a free download) to
view the pdf files. Links to the Adobe download site are on both the
G2SS index and appendix pages, and on the USSSP home page.
The Guide to Safe Scouting can be seen at:
In keeping with the procedure we've been using in the advancement and
merit badge pages, changes between the 1998 and 1999 editions are marked
in the test of each page. Deletions are shown by red strikethrough
text, and new text is shown in purple underlined text.
However, for ease in printing out copies of sections of the Guide for
use off-line, we have also prepared a second version, showing only the
current wording, without the colors or underlining. That version can be
accessed from the pages in the directory listed above, or from:
