John Cobel wrote asking whether the "troop first aid box should contain items
such as aspirin,
Tylenol, ibuprofen, antacid [pepcid ac) and other over the counter drugs
for dispensing to scouts."
Absent any official word to the contrary, general practice would indicate
that the first aid kit carry Tylenol as a pain reliever. I specify Tylenol
meaning that brand or any similar compound with acetaminophen as the pain
relieving ingredient. It is dangerous to provide Scout-age persons with
aspirin or Ibuprofen as those pain relievers may cause the onset of Reyes
Syndrome in young children.
Although I never have had the need for an antacid, Tums or the like are
I would not keep or dispense any other over-the-counter drugs and I would
religiously maintain the stock to never exceed expriation dates. As with any
injury or sickness treated by the Scout Leader, a clear record of the
incident, showing treatment, should be kept.
