Scouts-L Mail Archive for April of 1999: Colored Sand

My wife did this several years ago when she was a den leader. It seems to me
she used regular fabric dye--Rit or something similar. Mix a solution of
dye, dump in a few cups of sand, drain off as mcuh of the dye as you can,
then spread the sand on newspapers to dry. Stir occassionally to aid drying.
It will clump a little but the clumps break up easily.
I didn't think it would work since the sand grains won't absorb dye like
fibers will, but I guess enough dye sticks to the surface of the grains to
make it work.
