Scouts-L Mail Archive for April of 1999: Please use the Subject line!
Please use the Subject line!
Fri, 16 Apr 1999 14:41:20 -0400
I have a request to make of all members of this continuous campfire!
I have noticed an increase lately of postings without anything on the =
subject line. I would ask everyone to please put the subject of their =
posting on the subject line, every time.
As assistant e-mail administrator at my place of employment, I teach =
classes on how to use e-mail to employees (we are a school after all). I =
stress to all of them how important the subject line is in business =
communications. When someone is busy, they are given the opportunity to =
look at just the subject line of a mail message, and determine if they =
want to read the message now, later, or not at all.
Myself, I subscribe to several mailing lists, both for work and for =
pleasure, and get many messages a day from all of them. I scan the =
subject line and if I am not interested in the subject matter, or not =
involved in it, I delete the message without reading it. I also automatica=
lly delete any messages with a blank subject line, unless I recognize the =
sender, and want to read their message regardless of subject. I realize =
that I may be deleting messages that I am interested in, but I just don't =
have time to read everything I get, so that is one way I get rid of some =
Again I ask everyone to please use the subject line, for the benefit of =
all of us.
Thanks and YIS
