As a nineteen-year-old Assistant Scoutmaster, I'd say that this works really
well. Our troop has three Assistant Scoutmasters in the 18 and 19 bracket.
We've all been through Scoutmaster Fundamentals, and two of us are helping to
run the Fundamentals Course this week.
Having these younger adult leaders has given us some neat opportunities.
We've found that most of the boys are able to talk to us more than they can
talk to their leaders, because we're closer in age to the boys than we are to
The three of us have been charged with helping all of our newest Scouts to
First Class, and encouraging all of our Life Scouts to get to Eagle. We're
also responsible for a weekly evaluation with the Senior Patrol Leader and
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and other duties as needed.
The point is, USE THESE LEADERS! They're in a unique position to help your
