I learned the ways of friction fire last summer at NCS. There, we found
that instead of practicing with the kit you ordered it is a good idea to
make a practice fireboard and drill using a piece of pine (2x4 or so)
and a piece of broom handle.
These two relatively hard woods will allow you to establish good
drilling technique and perfect your skills without going through alot of
the fireboard (really soft wood) on your kit.
You probably wont get a fire going off your practice setup, however if
you can get heat and smoke off the practice kit when you try your real
kit it will be a cinch.
