April 1 Deadline

When the new advancement rules were announced last year, our troop had
23 Life Scouts who had an opportunity to complete their Eagle
requirements prior to the new rules going into effect April 1.
We provided the 23 Scouts with TroopMaster reports which showed what
they needed to do to finish up prior to April, and offered to assign
merit badge counselors to work with them on any merit badges they
needed. We also provided information on several community organizations
that were potential sources for Eagle Service Projects.
Well, the April 1 deadline has passed and 10 of our Scouts completed
their requirements for Eagle. We've already held boards of review for
4 boys and will have 6 more BORs by the end of April.
Here is some statistical information that may be of interest:
Ages of Scouts # of Boys # Meeting Deadline
-------------- --------- ------------------
13-14 15 9
15-17 8 1
It was somewhat surprising to me that only 1 of 8 "older" boys finished
up while 9 of 15 "younger" boys did. In my conversations with those
that did finish and those that didn't finish, it appears that the
"timing" of the change was the primary reason as the boys in high school
found it much more difficult as a very busy school year had already
started when the changes were announced.
One of our upcoming opportunities will be to work with a 17 year old boy
(who turns 18 in June) who didn't finish his service project by March 31
and now needs the Personal Fitness badge to qualify for Eagle. It's
going to be interesting!
