Hi Jan and Scoutellers!
Jan asked in her post:
>How strict are you being on the NO COTTON rule?
We are pretty strict about this....or at least as strict as we can possibly
be. I mean, we don't search the boys packs for contraband cotton, but if
an older scout appears in cotton, we make a LOT of fun of him (and watch
him very closely for signs of hypothermia). The point is, he should know
better. We absolutely do not let first year scouts appear in cotton.
I guess the whole thing is about setting up a very stringent routine for
winter camping. Winter camping is, as far as I'm concerned, some of the
very best camping! BUT it can be both disappointing AND very dangerous if
not approached in a disciplined manner. To wear cotton on a winter outing
is, in my book, simply a breach of camping discipline....very much akin to
walking off down the lane and leaving a campfire unattended for an hour, or
wearing aftershave in bear country. You just don't do that.
