Found the snowshoe plans, thanks to you kind folks

A big thank-you to all who gave me help on where to find snowshoe plans.
The Dec 98 issue of Boy's Life, page 19 has a brief write-up on how to
make snowshoes using pvc pipe, and the address where you can send away
for a 35-page set of plans for $15, offered by Venturing Crew 2222. If
you're thinking of making snowshoes and you don't have this issue, the
address for these plans is...

Our troop had already made the frames out of 3/4" pvc pipe, but we just
needed the plans on to make the bindings. What we learned from the
experience, if you're interested...
We first attempted to heat the pipe by pouring into the 10-foot pipe
(with a cap on the other end!) sand that we had heated in a barbecue.
What we learned from this is that the sand has got to be very hot since
it will cool somewhat while you pour it into the pipe. Try to use dry
sand - it doesn't take as long to heat as wet sand. Also, the pipe will
further cool it. Since we hadn't heated it enough and we wanted to move
ahead, I suggested that we just lay the pipes in the barbecue at the
points that would have to bend to fit the plywood jig we had made. This
worked, but the pipe would occassionally kink at the bends.
The following weekend, we heated up the sand sufficiently and this is
the preferred method, since the sand in the pipe prevents the pipe from
Wear heavy-duty leather gloves! The pipe gets hot and you need to handle
it to fit in the form.
Thanks again for the help, everyone!
