I need new advice on an old topic.
Physical Fitness - Our troop is teaching that merit badge now. One youth,
perhaps 14, perhaps 230 lb, is simply not capable of doing even 1 sit-up.
This is a BRIGHT child; he interited these characteristics from both sides
of the family.
I personally believe (been wrong before) that this Scout will never have the
physical ability to pass the sit-up test, or the running test. Physical
Fitness is a required Eagle badge; this Scout will get to Eagle, with this
exception. He is planning his project now.
What are the Scout's options? Anything short of a Doctor's letter? Would a
doctor actually write a letter excusing a Scout when there is no physical
impairment except weight and a family history of zero fitness?
>From a different perspective, is it fair to expect that one required merit
badge could require more than a year of intense effort to accomplish? Is
this appropriate? When do we make an exception to the requirements, when in
an extreme example, the requirements are simply not rational?
I believe in the rules; mostly, I follow them. I also believe in
compassion. Help me find a way to guide this Scout to Eagle; to lower an
