Camping Clothing Question

This past weekend was out district winter camporee. Temperatures
ranged from 30's to teens. My Scouts knew, but didn't always practice,
the concept of proper layering. I did object to Scouts who wore
jeans and sweat pants as outer day wear. I told them they should not
be worn on campouts in spring, fall, or winter. I plan to speak to
their parents about the dangers of wearing all cotton in cool and cold
Am I over reacting?
Alternative camping pants might be BDUs as discussed by others.
How about polyester/cotton or polyester/wool Scout pants? They
may not be stylish, but I think they'd be preferable to the all cotton
pants for winter camping. Any comments.
