First off, just a small reminder that the various religious awards are
not set up by National Office of BSA, but that all requirements are set up
for each religion, by each religion.
The above was recently posted, and represents the conventional wisdom,
certainly what I have espoused over the the past 15 years in Scouting. I do
want to disabuse this list however of the idea that it is strictly true. The
recent experience of the Unitarian Universalist Association (the Unitarians)
points up the fact that the requirements are really more of a joint effort.
That is the religion proposes, but the Religious Emblems committee at National
The UUA had prepared a revised emblem program, and had apparently sent it to
National, but had not sought National's approval before publication and
dispersal. The facts are somewhat murky here. But the upshot of all of this
is that the UUA medals are no longer on the approved medal list (see the
National Website or the new Boy Scout Requirements book). I do not intend to
criticize either side in this controversy, and I wish to point out that it is
my understanding that both sides are still talking in an effort to reach a
reconciliation, nevetheless it is not strictly true that National has nothing
to do with the requirements of a religious medal.
