Revised: Skiing and Snow Sports MBs

Bruce, I did not read the Scouts-L info in Jan. If an am repeating (appology
in advance.) However, I cannot agree with your position. If you look at the
intent and read all the information, you cannot seriously want to teach your
scouts that its ok to jump through a perhaps mistake or grey area, rather than
teach character and pride.
The New Scut handbook does not include skiing beacuse it was revised and
remnamed! No intention to drop a merit badge but a revison.
Look in the 1999 Boy Scout requirement book:
Revised mereit badges:
"Snow Sports (formerly Skiiing)"
These revision are currently in effect. Your advancment chairman is correct,
you cannot earn the same merit badge twice. To each each wold not make sense.
Each year we revised several M.B. Would you approve awarding another
Communication, safety, environmental science M.B. simply beacuse you did the
few changed requirements from what was required a year ago? To award Skiiing
and Snow Sports is exeactly what you would do. Please teach your scouts the
correct lesson. Snow Sports is not a new Merit Badge its a revision of
Skiiing Merit Badge!
Is the lesson worth teaching, that you can take advantage of the system, just
to get (not necessarily earn) another merit badge. Is the battle you want to
fight, teaching the scouts the correct lesson. Why are we here. This is the
only organiztion whose principle purpose is dedicated to teaching values and
building character in youth, that I know of.. That is why I am here. If it
was just a "youth group" or a "get ahead in business club" I would not be a
part of this organiztion.
Do the right thing. Your advancment chairman has a difficult job, make it
easier on him. Tell him thank you for the job he does. He is correct.
