Scouts-L Mail Archive for February of 1999: Scenario
Tue, 16 Feb 1999 19:59:02 -0500
Here's the scenario:
SM hasn't been very available for 12-14 months. Taking care of
difficult work and demanding family situations with strength, dignity,
determination and honor. SM has a decade of history with the Troop.
Old school macho.
Other adult Scouters have helped the Troop move from great conflict to a
rather impressive Boy-run effort with mostly 11-12 and a couple 13-14
At rechartering time, committee decided to restructure, recommend &
name new SM and Program SA (the ones that had been doing it) to the
relief of many. Everything was thought to have been done with the
acknowledgment of the SM and in the presence of the wife of the SM (he
continues to have a demanding work schedule).
The fan was cranked on high.
SM called CC to state that the vote and recommendation exceeded the
committee's authority (It's the Charter org's responsibility and
obligation to select SM, true.) SM plan's to stay SM even though he has
been unable to attend almost all functions for over year (Overtime
"obligations" - legitimate and totally understandable an "would do the
same thing in your shoes").
"The Troop is in better shape than it has been in years. Keep doing
what you're doing. I'm SM until I or Charter Organization says
That alienated the CC to the point of "I quit. Committee makes
recommendations. If they aren't honored, what's the sense. This is a
voluntary situation and who needs this grief?"
CC has been Eagle youth, District and Council Eagle Review board, and
is an exceptionally talented group discussion-focus leader.
Yeah, Charter Organization has been supportive in providing our
existence, but hasn't been involved with committee meetings. CR's son
"graduated" Eagle a few years ago. A good person, but usually only a
name on the paper and adult applications. All trust SM's reputation and
like what they see recently. Regardles of this outcome, "we" are
planning to push for more CO attendance to Committee meetings.
Yes, we can exist as we have and are, but that enslaves attitudes to
subservience of what appears to be an overbearing ego. (During this
season of Civil War re-enactments, I support most issues of the
Confederate States of America. Slavery, physically, mentally,
emotionally, intellectually, economically is an unacceptable option
which negates any and all other legitimate points of view... so what's
that have to do with this ???? ehhh, that's another essay...)
Having been the chief protagonist within the adult coalition to fix
what's broken for the past 12-14 months (and we do have the boys
actually experiencing doing a REALLY good job for being so young,
learning by doing and having no prototypes to give them examples)...
So do I push it more, work with ethical Machiavellian (oxymoron)
efforts, ignore it and acquiesce until SM "comes around"...
I'm not interested in passing the buck to someone else (District
Commish... viewed by SM as members of the "stinkin'yankees"
carpetbagging the District... ohhhh remember you're hearing only my side
of the story....)
Suggestions???... remember, The kids have gone from having an out of
control Troop to experiencing the promise. That's what those of us who
helped it happen want to keep happening.
