Hi! My name is

Sam Dunkin, I'm an ASM with Troop 211 (continuously chartered since 1921),
Astoria, OR, in Ft. Clatsop District of Cascade-Pacific Council (Lewis and
Clark spent the winter here, and hated it--rained all except about 6 days).
(Gas heat and electricity are wonderful+ACE-)
I joined Cub Scouts as a Wolf in 1951, did my Bear and Lion years, and
joined Troop 3 in Columbia, MO. Made 1st Class, was a Patrol Leader, went
to Camp Pa-He-Tse three times, sleeping either in cabins or Baker tents. I
don't remember that merit badges were offered there+ADs- I'm pretty sure they
weren't. Moved up to Post 3 when 14, then to an Air Explorer Post when that
was formed (don't remember the +ACM-). The post bought a Piper Cub, but were
unable to keep up the payments. I got 4 hours flying time in it.
When my son was old enough to join Cub Scouts, it was news to me that Wolves
were now 2nd-graders (I found out in December of that year). I attended
most of his den meetings, and eventually signed up as an Asst. Web. Den Ldr,
and then became Pack Treasurer. We crossed over into Troop 211 in 1995.
I'm quite impressed with the current Scouting program, the training
available to leaders, and the support of parents in our troop. I enjoy
camping more now, with vastly superior equipment. We eat much better, too.
I still have my Yucca Pack (2+ACI- wide canvas twill straps, my collarbones
still hurt), my Official BSA 49er tent, my BSA compass, and Scout knife (but
not my Cub Scout knife), my Heat-Tab stove, my mess kit, pistol belt and
canteen, and my hatchet (a couple of the boys used to carry machetes, but
they weren't much good for pounding tent pegs) and hunting knife. The old
sleeping bag (filled with kapok, good down to maybe 60 degrees, in which I
slept in temps down to around 20 with all my clothes and coat) is gone, but
I do have the groundcloth. I still carry the Scout knife and canteen when
camping. Also have some of my old BOYS LIFEs. I did just throw out the
old pup tent last month (found it old and moldy in my Mom's garage), and
there may be more BLs to be found there.
Two comments on the list:
1. I've seen responses to messages which seemed to miss the point
(as I saw it) and become flame-like. Many times what I see is, for me,
insufficient information from which to draw a valid conclusion to use for a
reasoned response. But since I'm on the Digest version, any response I
might make will be delayed anyway.
2. There is an amazing amount of information available for the asking, and
some mighty fine people out there ready to provide it.
3. (OK,+ACI- No one expects the Spanish Inquisition+ACEAIg-) I can't remember what I
was going to say, so it is just two comments.
