This is my husband's and mine third year in Cub Scouts. The first two years
we had 3 activities. Several of the boys missed the pin by one because the
parents were divorced and they had to go visit the other parent, out of town
or state. We felt it was unfair to those boys to not earn their pin simply
because their parents were divorced. And even if the parents weren't
divorced, we didn't prohibit them were attending the ones of their choice.
For the summer of '98 we had 5 or 6 activities. The boys had a variety of
activities and the ones that had to leave town were not left out for their
Of course the finale of the summer is a swimming party 1 week before school
This year we are going to pick a few of the sports activities and academic
activities to work on and then the boys can at least earn a belt loop, too.
We have a bike trail in our area and plan to ride that, have a scavenger hunt
in the local park (we have to decide on a theme), we go camping and fishing,
bowling. This past summer we had the Raingutter Regatta for the first time
and everyone loved it, so we will have rerun of that.
Some boys don't get to go on vacations because of financial conditions at
home. We have a few single parents that work hard and don't have the extra
money for vacations.
The only things the parents had to pay for last year was the kit to make the
boat, their food for the camping trip, and I believe that might have been it.
They seem to be ready for this summer now!!
