Any merit badge can be used toward advancement for Star, Life and Eagle
For Star, you must earn 6 badges, 4 from the required list.
For Life, you must earn 5 more badges, 3 from the required list.
For Eagle, you must earn 10 more badges, 5 from the required list.
First Aid is the only one from your list that is also on the required list.
If I remember correctly, Other required badges are
Citizenship in the Community,
Citizenship in the Nation,
Citizenship in the World,
Emergency Preparedness OR Lifesaving,
Swimming OR Cycling OR Hiking,
If I were you, I'd strenuously suggest to him to take that one.
And let him choose the other four himself. So what if he has all 'fun'
badges? Don't worry about it. Remember that he's going to have to be a
little more responsible for himself as a Boy Scout than he had to be in
Decatur, GA (Atlanta)
They can because they think they can.

Soil & Water Conservation
I don't want him to have all 'fun' badges, or all 'work' badges. But, as we
have yet to get the Scout handbook. I would appreciate knowing which of
these will be required for advancement. If you would like to give me a list
of your recommendeds, I'd appreciate it.
