Robert Morley asked "I was wondering if anyone would
be willing to share their database [of people
who will send a congratulatory letter to new eagle
scouts] with the list."
Although we have a list of people to whom our troop
sends requests for congratulatory letters, it would
be of minimal use to you; I suspect that it's the
same with most troops' lists.
On our list is
- The President of the United States (naturally)
- Our two US Senators
- Our Representative (in the US House of Representatives)
- The Governor of Virginia
- Our representative to the Henrico County Board of Supervisors
(who is, himself, an Eagle Scout)
- The head of our chartered organization.
You can add to this other names such as the mayor (if your town/city
has one), your representatives to the state legislature, etc.
Another couple of ideas would be
- A person who the new Eagle really looks up to or has
used as a role model.
- The CEOs of the parents' employers.
I would discourage use of a "master list" of people to send out
requests to. Use of such a list can result in an overwhelming
number of requests to people who are not really equipped to handle
the workload, plus a lot of letters to the Scout from people that
have no meaning to him. (Another down side is that you can wind
up sending requests to people who are no longer in public life,
are deceased, etc.)
I would prefer to get a half-dozen letters from people who have
some relationship to the new Eagle than two dozen from, effectively,
Troop 751, Glen Allen VA
... a good ol' Eagle ...
