Please allow me to clear this up, John, for you and others
wondering the same thing out there...
VENTURING and VENTURE are TWO SEPARATE PROGRAMS aimed at the same
"audience": the older boy, basically of high school age. That's
where the two programs divert from.
VENTURING (with the ...ing; and it's members are called
"Venturers") is the new older youth program basically replacing
Exploring. Venturing is open to males _and_females_ of high school
and junior college age (15 to 21 or 14 and completed the eighth
grade, just like Exploring). VENTURING has its own advancement
program, its own uniforming, and is basically an outdoor, hobby and
faith support program for older youth.
VENTURE PATROLS (note that they are not called "Venturers", but
rather "Venture Patrol members"!) exist as an OPTION in Boy Scout
Troops for older boys ONLY. Girls may participate but ARE NOT
REGISTERED as part of the program...they come as "tagalongs." The
intent of the Venture Patrol is to offer outdoor adventure
opportunities for the older boys in the Troop setting. They work
on the same advancement trails as Boy Scouts do (up to earning the
Eagle Palms) and CAN NOT work on the older youth program.
The confusion, as you can gather here, John, is because the BSA
chose to retain the Venture program in the Troop while at the same
time chose the name Venturing for their older youth division to
replace the traditional name Exploring. Exploring's still
around...but it's no longer a division of the BSA but rather a
component of the Learning for Life program. Explorers don't get to
wear BSA uniforms any more, as Learning for Life participants are
NOT BSA members.
VENTURING is the older youth program. Equate Venturing with
Exploring and you'll be fine. Their members are called Venturers.
VENTURE PATROLS are found as *an option* for older boys in the
Troop. Their members are still called "patrol members" but add the
word VENTURE in front (Venture Patrol members).
Hope this helps you and others out with the two confusing names.
Hopefully, the BSA will straighten this out by renaming the Venture
Patrol program something else (like Senior Scouting, for instance).
