Look closely at the mountains in the Venturing logo, Roman.
The peaks are designed to match up to the three fingers used in the
The problem with developing an "older youth program" has been how
to appeal to older youth without turning them off of "Boy
Scouting." Exploring held the answer; the Big E was originally
designed with the older "Circle V" emblem (which had a FDL in it)
to go into the corner of the Big E. Later, someone at National
didn't think it went far enough, and replaced the old Circle V
(it's connection to its past) with a plain FDL. It was a big ugly,
but the connection was there: Exploring was a part of the BSA.
Then, the "Zippin' E" was developed (by whom, I'm STILL trying to
find that out!! It was absolutely TERRIBLE in my opinion!) again
with the FDL in the corner of the E.
The Big E was appealling because it didn't "look like" a Boy Scout
emblem when by itself or with some lettering. It was one of the
BSA's really great strokes of genius! I'm thinking that's what the
BSA is looking for with the new Venturing emblem too.
It *was* an oversight not to place a FDL within the emblem, but I'm
sure that the folks responsible for developing the emblem "had it
covered" with the way they designed the mountains. But I wouldn't
be surprised if in the future, we see a small FDL below the
mountains or on the center of the mountain.

Instead, how about taking your best shot at adding the FDL to the
emblem and then sending it to the Venturing Division BSA at the
National Office. That way, they can see what you did, and then
take it from there. No guarantee that they'll change the logo but
until you let them know what you'll looking for, they can't
respond, can they??
Personally, I love the logo the way it is right now. If anything,
I would add the lettering "Venturing" and "Boy Scouts of America"
along the top sides of the patch, without it being part of the
By the way, the Sea Scout emblem existed for DECADES with the
fullsized First Class Badge and anchor. It wasn't anything new for
the new Venturing program.
Hope this helped out!
