Are you the "new kid on the block" because you recently moved to Boy
Scouting from Cub Scouting? I ask because you seem to think the sled
race is similar to pinewood derby. I'm *not* being critical, I don't
think one program area is better than the other, just different.
A difficult thing to learn about the Boy Scout difference is letting
Scouts fail. If, as I expect, the sled doesn't perform very well, the
Scouts will have a better one next year. More importantly, they may
learn something about the way they made a bad decision. And if you're
really lucky, improving for next year may help to build patrol spirit.
I don't know what kind of rules your District may have, but most don't
care what a sled looks like. I've seen some *really* bad ones, but it
doesn't seem to detract from the amount of fun had.
