Scouts-L Mail Archive for February of 1999: Swimming-another question

I have watched with great interest the discussions on swimming. I never
considered swimming a problem because I never had a problem with it. But, now
as a Scouter I see that a lot of kids have trouble swimming-my own son
included. He just doesn't like water over his eyes. Swim goggles help enough
for him to swim the first class test (but the style is just plain ugly) and
he is not alone.
Now for the question, I have a Scout that can swim like a fish BUT as soon
as he tries to float, he sinks like a rock. I mean straight down. I am an
excellent swimmer, scuba diver, and have taught lessons and nothing I have
tried will let him float. One of my ASM's earned his BSA lifeguard, was an
instructor, etc, and same deal. We have tried everything in our inventory and
the boy still sinks.
Would this qualify as being able to be waivered by the Committee. I feel
certain that they would if we asked. The boy is a very good Scout.
