As a Scoutmaster, I would have no problems accepting a nine year old provided
that he is physically on par with the others and emotionally mature enough for
I don't care too much about how smart a kid is, I have several that are
learning disabled and who are great Scouts. It just takes a little longer for
them to learn skills. In our Troop this has helped some of the "normal" kids
to be more compassionate.
Some might argue that he should be with his "friends" or with his "age
group." I can only speak from experience; our Cub Pack has kids from 5
different elementary schools and our Troop has kids from 3 middle schools and
2 (rival) high schools. They get along fine and I think it is great that the
kids get to meet different people than they see in school all week.
