I have recently activated a Troop in Screven County Georgia, a large rural
county in SE Georgia. We are belong to the Canoochee District, Coastal
Empire Council in Savannah. We are one of the two furtherest untis from
Council in terms of geographical distance. The County has had several
troops in the past but they have come and gone as SM's retire, die, move or
I started out in Scouting as a cub in the late 50's, made it up to Life
Scout before graduating in 1965. I am an active OA member and have had the
pleasure of attending Philmont. I was inactive in scouting until about 7
years ago when my youngest son went into tigers. I served as an assistant
den leader, den leader, webelos leader during his period in cub scouts.
The Cub pack dropped to five scouts in 1997 when my son's group was the
only active den (WEBELOS). It was about this time that I was debating on
moving my son to another county with a more active scouting program. The
final result of this was that with some renewed interest a little help from
a new sponsor we were able to get to about 35 boys after school night in
97. We started the troop in April of 98 with 6 boys and now have about 13
(3 Webelos Crossovers).
I would like ideas on how to keep the troop going, developing a good
committee and how to get my young leaders trained.
