Scouts-L Mail Archive for February of 1999: Broken sled
Tue, 2 Feb 1999 20:43:11 -0500
Last night after many meetings of hard work and preparation to finish
building two sleds for the Troop to use at their first Klondike derby, the
boys on one team break theirs. They were turned lose to race/run them in
the dark and in the rain without supervision of adults. Where the runners
curved up and met the platform is not a fact anymore. Instead, one runner
was broken about four to five inches from where it joined the platform/bed.
Instead of repairing the one runner, it was decided to saw off the perfectly
good runner to match the damaged one.
These boys are now only days from the competition, which is this Saturday,
March 6. In another Council about 70 miles away. Deposit has been paid to
the Council for event and each boy has prepaid their participation fee to
Is a sled in this condition acceptable to race? Will it not be hard to
handle and will it be graded down right from the start for it's condition?
It does not look like any of the plans for Klondike sled plans that I have
'lain an eyeball' upon in helping to design these sleds. I am truly
disappointed in this turn of events, however I was not in charge with this
occurrence took place. No-one seemed very upset that this action took place
and nothing was said. I don't feel I am in a position to say anything as I
am the 'new kid one the block'.
What do we do now. Forfeit or proceed?
