Last week Scouter Phil Bennet died rather unexpectedly.
Phil was a kind and gentle man. Though soft-spoken, his words were heard
loud and clear by those around him.
Phil is a member of Occoneechee Council in North Carolina. He was
Scoutmaster of our summer camp Trailblazer program. Through this, Phil
was the Scouter that probably had the greatest impact on a Scout in his
first year of Scouting, outside the Scout's unit leadership.
My son, Ken, spent his first year as a Boy Scout in 1998. He was a member
of Phil's "Trailblazer Troop & Patrol" during the 1998 summer camp period.
Ken's experience and memory with Trailblazer is a testimony to Phil's
impact on Scouts - Ken has said several times how much he enjoyed working
with "that really nice guy at Trailblazer". I am sure many Scouts hold
the same memories of Phil.
A note from another council Scouter sent to the Occoneechee Scouter List:
Further Information: Phil passed away on Jan 28th, he was a friend to
many and a avid Scouter, He was the Trailblazer Director at Camp Durant
this past summer and was again on board for the '99 season with many
improvements to the program. Phil along with his family spent many hours
at Camp working to improve the facility.
Please keep Phil's family in your thoughts and prayers.
