When I got back into Scouting some 10 years ago ... I gave up alcohol
completely. I thought it a bad example to be seen drinking by one of my
cubs, a scout, or their parents. I never took up the nasty (my opinion) of
smoking or I would have stopped that as well. I never had a problem with
drinking, I just felt that I should set an example.
I hate seeing a bad story in the news about some person and the story
includes something about the person being a scout leader. We need all
the good we can get. Too many people know me through scouting and I
want them to know that I not only spout the Scout Law and Oath, but that I
try and live by them.
I have this vision of some cub and their family driving along a street and
there is their Cubmaster walking out of a liquor store. Or somebody
having a wreck and the only survivor is the drunk Scoutmaster. You have
to know that the press would have a good time with that as their lead. Not
a pretty picture in my book. That's just me and my personal opinion.
Some may agree and others may not. YiS Terry
