I just wrote the following for our Troop newsletter. May also use it somehow
in recruiting. True story, names changed to protect the innocent. ;-)
I had an interesting discussion with a friend recently--he has a 10 year
old son in Cubs. A week or two ago another family member suffered a
siezure. My friend was very impressed by his young son's composure &
presence of mind. He credits this to their Scouting experiences.
This is what we are about. The boys don't know it but our purpose is
more than having fun. Scouts learn leadership. They learn to handle
themselves in emergencies They learn self-reliance. The fun stuff is
great--it's what we use to lure them in; it's the "frosting on the cake".
But it's what they learn while having fun that's most important.
