One of the responses I haven't noticed to this question is whether the SM
should be calling the SPL to get a message to the patrols. I've dealt with
a number of SMs who use the SPL to cover their errors. For example, the SM
forgot to share information at the last PLC or troop meeting. Now he
realizes it needs to get out before the next meeting so he dumps it on the
I notice that a lot of SMs use the SPL to do calling "because that's the
chain of command." But, at troop meetings, they go around the SPL.
Things do come up at the last minute and the troop should have some sort of
calling tree to handle these. But, this should not be the normal mode of
communication for the unorganized SM.
I certainly don't know what fits this situation, but, as a parent, I got
tired of calls from the SM to my SPL sons because the SM forgot to pass on
information he had for several weeks.
