Howdy, Scouts-L gang!
I have to talk about this because I am so excited! The NEW Boy Scout
Handbook is now available and probably on the shelves of your local
Scout shops. Last Friday, November 13, our troop advancement chair was
in our council's Scout office when the new BSA Handbooks were
delivered. At about 6 pm that night, she telephoned me and told me
about this. Our Scout office is open on Saturdays until the end of the
year and she suggested that I pick up a copy. Well, I wanted to, boy
did I ever, but Saturday was the day we distributed the Scouting For
Food bags for our annual service project and it was the day our troop
(Troop 411) departed for a one-night campout at Reed Bingham State Park
for a one-night campout centered around hiking. (On this campout, we
hiked 3 miles Saturday and a little over 4 miles on Sunday). Monday
morning, as soon as I eluded my boss and his evil cronies, I beat a path
to the Scout office (it is roughly 10 minutes away from my job) and
purchased my personal copy of this new book. I swiftly returned to my
place of employment and slipped in undetected. (Okay. I work in a print
shop that only has 4 employees and, from what I can determine, I am the
only FULL time employee! The co-owners of my company always seem to be
in "stealth" mode.) I took the first opportunity (about three minutes
after I got back) to start browsing through this new edition. WOW!!!
Yippee!! and, in case I forgot to mention it, WOW!!!!! I was very
impressed!! They have outdone themselves this time. I could go into
detail about this new book but I won't. It not only corrects a few
deficiencies that us Scouters have been complaining to national about
for years, but it also lays down a clear path for a Scout to follow to
advance towards Eagle. Today, Tuesday, November 17, I returned to our
Scout office with a check from our troop treasurer and purchased 23 more
copies of this book. This almost wiped out the stock our shop had on
hand but they have plenty more books on order. We have promised our
Scouts that the instant the new books were available, we would get them
the new books. I urged our patrol leaders to get in touch with all of
their patrol members and have them present at our next troop meeting so
we could present our Scouts with this new book. We will definitely be
busy during that meeting ( and, probably a few meetings afterwards)
transcribing information from their old books to their new books.
Yippee!! The new BSA Handbook is here!!!
Now. Can I hold my breath for two months waiting for the new
Scoutmaster Handbook? Uh, probably not.
Yours in Scouting,
