Agreed. We have a few folks around here who are not even into the Old
Testament, although the message of the Sermon on the Mount from the New
Testament resonates with them. We have Buddhists in the neighborhood, and
Seven Drums (though I am not sure the latter has any members in Scouting).
There are themes enough common to all religions I have ever encountered,
which are profoundly Judaic and Christian as well, to fill out a service.
The Ten Commandments have many common themes with the basic Buddhist
precepts, for example.
Baden-Powell dreamed that Scouting would succeed in all lands and that as a
result war would become impossible. I do not expect that he anticipated
that all Scouts would become members of the Church of England in the
process, nor that he himself would convert to some other religious
What we do in the relative privacy of our Troop meetings is one thing; what
we do when attending religious services of a charter partner is another
thing; and what we do when a wide variety of Scouts are assembled from many
backgrounds, is yet another thing. It is not a betrayal of our own religion
to be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and kind toward the members
of another religion. In my view of Christianity there is nothing which
precludes what I just said. In my view of Christianity, the Bosnian
experience perpetrated by certain so-called Christians is indeed rather
pagan in the worst sense of that word. To call a pogrom, an ethnic
cleansing, Christian is Newspeak.
