Scouts-L Mail Archive for November of 1998: our latest campout
our latest campout

We did something a little different this weekend. Our monthly Troop campout
was at one of the local nursing homes. We camped & cooked outside but
cooked about double what we needed. At every meal about 8 or 10 of the
residents joined us (we ate inside). Saturday morning a couple of the boys
baked cookies in box ovens & took them around to some of the residents.
It was a great experience for the guys, talking with some of the people. The
residents really appreciated it (at least the ones that were able to eat
with us--it's a big place so only a fraction were able to). Just being able
to do something different is a treat for them.
Not all the residents are seniors. The nursing home has a head injury unit
and a lot of them are younger--some not that much older than the Scouts. It
was a good followup to a speaker we had last month--the director of the unit
came & talked to the boys about head safety, bike helmets, etc.
This was set up by one of our ASMs who's an administrator there.
