Just had a chance for a brief look at the new handbook.
1) The cover seems to be some kind of tough plastic. The corners are
rounded, not square. The binding seems heavier. Overall, it would seem to
be a more durable book than the previous book.
2) It now shows, in detail, how to whip a rope and tie an ankle bandage, two
things the last handbook didn't do.
3) Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class skills are now each in their
own section, instead of having all First Aid for all three ranks in one
4) Each of those sections is headed up by the requirement list. There were
blocks to check them off, but no signature blocks or lines. I wonder where
in the book there's somewhere for a leader to sign off that the requirement
was passed off?
As I said, a brief look. My council sent out a letter on it that seems to
imply that each Scoutmaster will get his or her own copy from the Council
(hope that's right!). I do like that the new handbook has been getting some
publicity. The Chicago Tribune wrote it up. They found it newsworthy that
it has a section in it warning Scouts against perverts on the Internet.
